Most Popular Dog Breeds in the UK

The UK is a nation of dog lovers. We love all types of dogs, big and small and all between. But which are the UK’s most loved? You may be surprised at some of the entries on the list that make the grade. No matter what breed, what age of dog, and the lifestyle. they can all enjoy our Barker & Barker natural dog treats (unless you have a Dalmatian who must be extra cautious with liver content of course!)

10 – German Shepherd

Highly intelligent and extremely loyal, the German Shepherd can be an easy to train family dog. They should be for experienced dog owners though and can come with health issues. You’ll need plenty of space for this breed and be prepared to give them exercise, grooming and correct nutrition.

9 – Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffies are medium sized dogs that have a lot of energy! Grooming wise, their short coats are easy to manage. They should be socialised from an early age, and they need lots of playtime!

8 – English Bulldog

English Bulldogs can thrive even in smaller homes. They’re fairly quiet, don’t require as much exercise as some breeds and have a coat that is easy to brush (although it will need brushing often)! They can suffer with breathing issues so it is important to do your research.

7 – Cockapoo

This is the only crossbreed on the list. This Cocker Spaniel-Poodle mix have thick curly coats that aren’t prone to too much shedding and as such may be suitable for people with pet hair allergies. They have a lot of energy that follows them well into the senior years!

6 – Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are quite good-natured dogs that are excellent for first time dog owners, just be mindful of that beautiful coat that needs a lot on the grooming front!

5 – Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels tend to love people and other pets! They require a substantial amount of exercise and are very playful. They’re probably not great for families with very young children as they can be excitable and require one to one attention.

4 – Labrador Retriever

The Labrador is always steady on the top 10 list of popular breeds, being a great all around family dog that is extremely loving and loyal as well as easy to take care of. They are boisterous , greedy and fun!

3 – Pug

Pugs are small, sturdy, and happy to go where you go as they do well in apartments and larger homes. They love attention which can be nice but hard when leaving the home, and as such separation anxiety can be an issue. This is another breed that can suffer with breathing difficulties so should be carefully managed.

2 – Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world. They are easy to take care of and can be easily trained. However, Chihuahuas often think they are much bigger than they are and can become protective over their home and family, they are not generally a good pet around young children.

1 – French Bulldog

“Frenchies” are a short-legged adaptable breed. They love being in a home with a family but should be supervised with young children. They are also known to be a little mischievous!
