Managing Arthritis In Your Dog During Cold Weather This Winter

Arthritis is extremely common in dogs, as much as it is in humans. It is a painful condition that affects the joints and can stop them from doing the things like they used to. With a little help though, we can help our canine friends enjoy life even while living with the condition. As the temperature drops, the cold weather can exacerbate painful joints. It is something you will notice more when they stand up after a sleep and they appear stiff, or get up in the morning, or are more reluctant to jump up on a surface such as a bed or sofa. So what can we do to make our dogs more comfortable?

Keep a comfortable home for them.

Soft doggie beds and plenty of blankets can your friend feeling comfortable and warm. The cold can trigger more pain from arthritis, so having a warm space to go to is essential. Going from a cold outside to a hot fire can be just as bad, so invest in a coat for when your dog goes outside and keep them away from open heat when they come in from the cold.

Make your home safer.

Doggie ramps are quite popular and easy to get in your home. They are important if you have any steps getting into your home or up and down decking in the back garden. If you have stairs, consider a baby gate to prevent them from trying to get up them on their own.

Have regular check-ups with your vet.

Dogs don’t always tell you when they are feeling bad, which is why it is important to have regular vet visits anyways, but you should make sure you have routine check-ups as often as needed to keep your dog in good health. They may give pain medication, and routine visits can also ensure the medication is working or make adjustments if needed.

Maintain a healthy diet.

Excess weight will only put added stress on joints , so make sure your dog stays in the healthy weight range. Consider supplements that are specifically for joint function like glucosamine, and choose only low fat treats like Barker and Barker Natural Dog Treats.

If at any time you are concerned for your dog's health, just give your vet practice a call, they will be happy to check them over.
